The Zombie Who Smelled of Sunflowers

Hey all,
Here's my most recent painting. I had to shoot it with my camera so sorry for the quality. If any of you have watched Samurai Champloo the main character, Fuu, is searching for the father who is known as the Samurai who smells of sunflowers. So I got it into my head that I would paint her in the style of one of Van Gogh's portraits that he painted soon after getting out of the asylum, with his sunflowers in the background. It was a good deal of fun because it was quite different than I normally paint. It's good to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while.
And for all you zombie lovers out there, Hooray, The Walking Dead is finally on TV.

The Eye Doctor

The good folks at Dragon Moon Press liked my Toothless portrait so came back to me with a request for another novel cover image, the title being 'The Complete Guide to Writing Horror Volume 1'. So I suspected they wanted something undead, something evil. They settled on 'Hangin' Around' and I spruced the little guy up for cover quality.. So that's my first official sale from this blog, lol, someone please buy more, who will looks after my zombies?!?!?

Thanks to Scott and everyone else who has wished me well on the gallery opening this Friday. I really appreciate the sentiment.
Here's all of the finished paintings that will be in the show. The Stewardess piece won an award in the Gencon art show last weekend, and the response to the paintings was overwhelming. It's the best response I've had to any paintings I've ever done.I have some new drawings that will be in there also, which I will post soon.

Zombei Atack

Hey all,
Here's my second finished piece. Learning a lot more about what will work and what won't with this process.
This one was a blast. I knew that I wanted something big and yellow in the background, and a school bus popped into my head. I didn't want to render it out, though, so I thought it would be cool if there was a stucco type wall behind her that some kids went ape shit on with crayons. I asked my cousins to draw a bus for me. I knew that I wanted stick figure zombies, so I started working on them. They all turned out full of gesture and in the end looked like an adult trying to emulate how a kid draws stick figures.
I went over to a friends house the following week and there on his fridge was a drawing his nephew had done of a big zombie battle. His had a helicopter, and was labeled Zombei atack. It was so perfect I couldn't believe the coincidence. So, like any good artist I totally ripped him off.
Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Emma and Alex for the school bus, and Archer for the zombies and the blood, and the awesome spelling of Zombei atack.
I was concerned about attaching actual lace to the painting but I think it worked out well.

So, this painting has acrylic, oil, crayons, colored pencil, and various collage elements. I forgot how much fun coloring with crayons is.

Taxicab Confession

A cab ride in Tokyo is a unique experience. The cabbies wear suits and ties, military style hats, and white gloves. Their cabs are immaculately clean, and the seats are fitted with doilies. I wanted to incorporate some of those elements in this piece. I'm thinking about using doilies in the piece somehow, as well as some broken glass. Still trying to figure out where and how, though.

Oh Lordy, Me!!

Oh Lordy, Me!! his halo hasn't decayed yet!

I'm loving this blog, this place gives me a chance test new brushes, colour combos (admittedly I'm not too experimental there!) and just generally play with the programs, all within the tight focus of zombies.

At the moment I'm refueling my love for Gel layers in Painter. Originally I couldn't tell much of a difference between using a gel layer and a multiply layer so ignored them. More fool me, the difference is there and it's nice and subtle.... it's a shame PS doesn't support them.

I suggest that it's worth having a play with them and see what you get out of them.. make sure the 'pick up underlying texture' box is unticked! Otherwise you'll just get a right muddy mess. :)

Ladybug

Not sure if I'm going to paint this one. If I do I want to keep everything (except the flesh) red and black, even the hair. She has ladybugs crawling all over her if you can't tell, hence the title. The background would be totally black. Freelance stuff keeping me from devoting as much time as I'd like to these, but I gotta pay them bills.
I've been cropping the figures at odd points like right through a shoulder or breast to create a slight feeling of uneasiness in the viewer. Does anybody get that, or is that just some random artist bullshit?

Reworked painting

I reworked the motorcycle helmet zombie. I cut out the cast shadow and brightened the highlights on the zombie so that she'd pop from the background. I'm much happier with the finished piece now.

Zombies for the holiday

As not to let something like christmas ruin my zombie activities, I worked this one up over the break. I've got something pretty fun in mind for the background. We'll see how it turns out.

I was working on this piece at a cafe when, and I forgot to bring my IPod. Of course the cafe decided that was the perfect opportunity to play an hour straight of Madonna's greatest hits (if there is such a thing). She fucking sucks. Flat. Out. Sucks. I'd rather listen to a hyena get hit in the nuts with a ball peen hammer than have to listen to her shrill tones. What's more disturbing is that because of our whorish consumer culture I knew every lame ass fucking song. Not word for word or anything, but I could identify it. So if you notice tears on this drawing that is why.

First color piece

Well, here's my first painting. I think it could still use some work, so if you see something that stands out please comment. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but mostly it's nice to have one done. I'm experimenting a lot so this one was good for learning what I will be able to do and not do with the paint and materials. There's some collage on there, and I'm looking to push those elements in future pieces.
I wish there was a little more separation between the figure and the background, so like I said if anyone has any ideas fire away.
Nothing to rant about today because I'm still too pissed about Friday's Ink Bloom cover debacle.

Off tomorrow for the holidays so no posts for a while, but the Zombies will be back with a vengeance in 2010.

Kawaii

Kawaii is a Japanese word that means cute. Poses like this and ones with what Westerners would consider the "peace" sign (like in the Butterfly Wings drawing) are part of that look in photo shoots. If you see any kind of vacation photos or online photos of Japanese girls they are always doing some variation of the peace sign, but that's not what it means to them, which I like.
I've been working in some collage elements on the paintings, and I think I'm going to try to add actual black lace to her left arm. I have something really fun in mind for the background for this piece.
I finished the first of the paintings, but I won't be able to scan it before I leave for the holidays, but I'll definitely have it up here before the New Year.

Now for the rant portion of our program. On my other project, Ink Bloom, which is about to be sent off to the printer, the designer dropped me and my co-author Chris Seaman a nice little e-mail late on Thursday saying that they aren't going to use the cover we painted, but are going to use a piece from the inside. They assured us they know better than we do what will sell books, and I was told by one of the higher ups that she has 15 years experience in publishing and the track record at Impact is pretty good. Well excuse the fuck out of me for actually wanting to discuss the decision. And screw the fact that I have 15 years experience in this business as well, with Chris having another 10. Not to mention that we have been involved with products that sell more than Impact could in a lifetime. And don't mind the fact that Chris and I researched the fuck out of covers and came up with a super kick ass one that would catch the eye of our target audience. That doesn't count for shit. In their infinite wisdom they chose a piece out of the book that shows the character from behind in the lower right hand corner of the painting. Fucking Brilliant. Everyone knows that when you want to launch a new property you always want to show the main character with her cute face obscured, right. But, as I have said, they have assured me that they know best and don't need to discuss this at all with a couple of dumb ass artists like Chris and me. Merry fucking christmas you miserable fucking cunts.

Butterfly Wings

Trying a horizontal piece this time. As I was working on it I thought about a set of little wings and was reminded of one of the greatest movies ever, the Korean film Old Boy. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen it, and if you haven't watch it immediately. Spielberg and Will Smith are going to make an American version. What a couple of jerkoffs. Why can't people just leave masterpieces alone.
Speaking of jerkoffs, I was sitting in the bookstore cafe where I often go to draw and they had Sting singing christmas music playing. Could somebody kill that motherfucker already. I wanted to stick me freshly sharpened pencil into my ears and rupture my eardrums. It was that awful.
A final thought, as I've decided to post my psychotic ramblings on this blog (you're welcome Scott), wouldn't Catcher in the Rye be a better book if Holden Caulfield were a zombie. I certainly think so.

Spontaneous Zombie Combustion..

That's one hell of a meeting between a 'fart and a cigarette lighter'.. burn baby burn.

So, with this image I finally dropped the green and went for blue instead, of course I kept my favourite red/orange colours and I'm still working on a background of pure black. I'm not using any sketches, just scrummaging away with an oil brush on the black background with a rough idea of what I want to accomplish.. practice makes perfect.. apparently.
I'm looking at this and it looks like it might be a little hard to read, but I actually quite like that, I think it adds a little more confusion and drama to the piece, but let me know your thoughts on that if you get the time.
Hell, I know if I was being burned from the inside out I might be a little confused.. only a little mind you ;)

Harajuku Zombies !!!

Thank you Scott for the invitation to take part in your blog, and for the outstanding introduction. The pieces that I will be showing on this blog are paintings I am doing to fill a void left by the soul sucking effects of 15 years of freelance illustration. I hope to move these pieces into the lowbrow art scene, and perhaps to put out a book of these images with Scott.
The theme of these paintings, as the title of this post exclaims, is Harajuku Zombies. Harajuku Zombies are a combination of the two great passions of my life. 1) Zombies 2) Japanese pop culture. I want to combine the sickeningly sweet with the just plain sickening. I will also be throwing in all kinds of references to manga and anime, so if you are a fan keep your eyes peeled.
This first drawing was inspired by the super cute model Miwako Ichikawa, and CUTiE magazine, with a nod to Sgt. Frog.
For those off you who do not know, Harajuku is a small area in Tokyo next to the Meiji Shrine. It is the epicenter of Tokyo fashion, and is a gathering place for the youth of Tokyo who show off their style and individuality. If you go there on a Sunday you will see some sights that will really blow your mind.

Zombie: Numero Uno

Finally we get to grips with starting this blog!

I'm going to open it up by posting a re-work of one of my old paintings, originally painted using ArtRage 2.5 about a year ago. I took him into Painter 11 over the weekend and gave him a little facelift.. well as much as possible for a stinking zombie.
